Offering Technical and Vocational training to Youths

Overview

The Trench Town Polytechnic College came into existence because of the merger of two high schools: Trench Town High School and Charlie Smith High School; in September 2015. As a  tertiary education provider it offers diverse courses of continuing education, technical and vocational training and is focused on aligning workforce with industry through quality and relevant education..

The infrastructure available includes, but is not limited to, laboratory facilities and relevant equipment for deep learning in skills-based specializations. The academic systems and structures support various teaching and learning strategies, such as mastery learning, hands on approaches, simulation, concept attainment, work placements, direct instruction, cooperative learning, and social inquiry which are aimed at information-processing, skill and social development, and entrepreneurship.

LIBRARY

The TTPC Library & Resource Centre, an array of resources, will play a vital role in many of the undertakings of the College, acting as partners in the development of the campus community, student life, and research. People need information to educate themselves and develop their true potential, and for this they need literacy skills and access to information. The library provides access to printed and electronic resources; it is a place where information is shared.

Our Collection

Reference Collection

The Reference section houses three areas which are known as:

  • The Reserve Book Collection (RBC)

These items are housed over the circulation counter and in an adjoining room to the documentation room, located at the rear of the library. Books from this section may be borrowed for use in the reading area or borrowed on overnight or week ended loans. Students are allowed a maximum of two books for overnight and weekend loan; these books however must come from different subject areas. All other materials must be used within the library and should be borrowed as a reading room loan.

  • Prescribed and supplementary texts

  • Pamphlets

  • Examination past papers

  • Periodicals

  • The West Indian Collection

  • E-book collection

The West Indian Collection is fairly significant. It includes older historical works about the Caribbean, textbooks written for Caribbean education as well as novels and collections of poetry by Caribbean authors.

Earlier Editions

When sufficient copies of later editions are available, earlier editions are moved to open-shelf reference and in open-shelf general collection. One copy is placed in open-shelf reference and all other copies placed in the open- shelf reference collection. In the case where there is only one copy available, this copy will be kept in the open-shelf reference collection. Final decision(s) regarding relocation of later edition, rest with the College Librarian.

  • The Open Shelf Reference Collection

  • Dictionaries

  • Atlases

  • Encyclopedias

  • Yearbooks

  • Biographies

  • Textbooks

Students are allowed free access to these materials but are not permitted to remove them from the library. Students are advised that books removed should not be reserved and are to be left on the tables/carrels instead.

Non-Reference Section/Open-Self General

The second, known as the non-reference section houses one of the reading areas of the library where students are able to use additional reading materials including fiction books.

Arrangement of Books

The books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification System with the exception of the fiction materials. The classification number which makes up the call number is located on the spine of the books.
